Two full days of learning the PLAY Project principles, methods, and techniques.

This professional development opportunity will provide you with an overview of the PLAY Project methods and principles along with case studies to gain immediate skills in helping children with autism. This interactive group learning experience facilitated by Richard Solomon, MD, autism expert and developmental and behavioral pediatrician and the PLAY Project Center team. The workshop consists of case studies, video analysis of parent and child interaction, and group activities that develop your skills in play-based, developmental and behavioral techniques for engaging children with autism and other developmental delays.

Who will benefit: Special and general educators, teacher assistants, speech/language pathologists, social workers, psychologists, behavior specialists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, program administrators, and parents and other family members. This workshop can serve as a first step in pursuing the Certified PLAY Project Consultant credential.

Learning Objectives:

  • explain the core components of the PLAY Project intervention
  • describe the components of an intensive autism intervention including interventions that are categorized as play-based, developmental, and behavioral
  • implement methods that help children with autism (1) increase their social interaction and (2) develop a joyous relationship with their caregivers and other adults
  • demonstrate a thorough understanding of the PLAY Project Model (including the principles, methods, and techniques) and begin helping children with autism and their caregivers immediately
  • explain the differences between the various programs of PLAY Project including PLAY Autism Intervention and Teaching PLAY
  • identify techniques that help improve language, social skills, behavior, development, and play skills of children with autism
  • develop a description of the Greenspan 6 Functional Developmental Levels (FDLs) and how they relate to the PLAY Project
  • identify the behaviors and symptoms of children who have sensory processing challenges
  • describe how a child’s unique profile is created and develop a plan to improve the child’s social interaction based on the profile
  • demonstrate the ability to identify developmental progress and PLAY Project methods and techniques through the review of video case studies
  • explain the 7 Circles of PLAY and how they related to the PLAY Autism Intervention Program
  • identify and address example challenges of parents of children such as family dynamics, professional boundaries, and child’s diagnosis of ASD

Continued Education: certificates of attendance and continued education units (CEUs) will be issued to all participants at the completion of the course
